Michael Shane O’Leary, 68, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 27, 2025. Shane was born May 10, 1957 in Louisville to Paul and Phyllis O’Leary and was raised in Jeffersontown alongside his older siblings Guy and Debbie. Shane graduated from Jeffersontown High School and following in his father’s foodsteps, began his working life at the McMahan Fire Department. He then transitioned to a long career as a carpenter including many years of service to Abel Construction, co-owning and operating Orn Construction, and retiring from the Carpenter’s Union. Later in his career he became a licensed home inspector for Home Inspection Services of Louisville and more recently did maintenance at Baptist Hospital, where he took great pride in his contribution to patient comfort and safety.
Shane leaves his wife Julie, daughters Kathleen (Zach), Shelby (Jaylan), and Michelle (Stephen), son Patrick (Lovelace), his brother Guy, sister Debbie, six grandchildren Lukas, Charlee, Kinslie, Penny, Stephen, Korra and his canine companion Coti. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Phyllis.
Shane married the love of his life, Julie, on June 24, 1989. Together they built a family that was the center of his heart and world. He never stopped moving. If he wasn’t improving his own home, he was helping one of his kids or friends make their homes match their dreams. Shane was known for his humor, that dry sarcastic humor we will all miss. One of Shane’s proudest achievements was his 39 years of sobriety. He was a pillar of the AA community and specifically for his homegroup, the Preston Highway Group. He was dedicated to supporting those in recovery and sponsored many.
The family is grateful that in his final year he was able to travel out of the country for the first time (Mexico) to witness to his son’s marriage, he gained a new granddaughter and saw his youngest daughter graduate from nursing school. In his final week he spent quality time with his wife visiting their son and daughter-in-law in Florida. Shane fulfilled his life’s purpose and touched so many hearts along the way. May he rest in peace.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Church on Saturday, October 4th at 12 pm. 2931 Pindell Ave. Louisville, KY 40217
